Woke up at 2 in the afternoon. I didn't practice last night because apparently I was too busy drinking.
I've been corresponding with my aunt who, like the Western concept of a dragon, sits on her millions of dollars, in her 90s I calculate, with nothing to do but count her money I guess. A assume there's a non-zero chance that she might decide to bestow on me what for her would be a bar tip, enabling me to return to Hawaii sooner than planned. Since she's a good American, I'm sure empathy has been trained right out of her so while I say there's a non-zero chance, I still think it's fairly close to zero.
I actually cooked two interesting things yesterday. I'd bought a little package of baby sardines at Mitsuwa Marketplace and had to use those up, so I made a sort of pancakes with them with an egg and some tempura batter and a little sake. Those came out well. And at dinner-time, I made some shrimp gyoza following the recipe Shinichi's World on YouTube shows his mom making. Those also came out well.
Although I've gone back to read-only on reddit, I follow some subs like r/hawaii and it's just amazing, people are getting vaccinations there like it's nothing. A few days ago I was telling the gal working at The Arsenal how much more advanced Hawaii is than the mainland, like if you work a job, you're guaranteed health insurance, and they have this thing called "direct deposit" where your paycheck is automatically deposited in your bank account. And there are these things called "health clinics" where you can see the doctor, just like it's nothing. Hawaii is more Socialist than the mainland in a lot of ways and until the get our much-needed Socialist revolution the best I can do is to move back there.
I packed all but 2 of the packages that have to go out, and was out the door at a quarter after 6. I stopped at Zuka Foods and got some banana chips, and went on and did my deliveries, picked up a lot of packing stuff on the way back, and stopped at Sam & Curry for some good old goat curry. They're extra nice there, and I got some shrimp in there too.
I got back here, put things away, and actually ate the whole curry rice bowl. That was a lot of food! Some people practice what they call OMAD or One Meal A Day. It was certainly enough food for a whole day.
After cleaning up a bit, myself and the shop, Ken came by at the usual time. He had some plastic strapping and tools and wanted to put cardboard around the annealing furnace and I ended up helping. First, he was sure he could use the tensioner tool because he'd used a similar one before, but it really stumped him. I went on YouTube and found a demonstration video with the exact same Uline tools, and Ken watched it a bit and things went better. It took us a lot longer than it should have but we did eventually get it done, with cardboard wrapped around the thing and properly strapped down. Ken'd still be tussling with things if it weren't for my help - I held the flashlight, made sure the crimp was aligned right in the crimper, and in the end came up with the idea of crimping a short scrap of strapping to our last bit to make one more strap around the thing. And what gets me is, Ken and I can work on some pretty annoying stuff and we never get mad at each other. It's like having this friend in high school you build models and treehouses and stuff with, and always get along.
Ken felt he was low on blood sugar after all the fiddling around with the strapping, and I looked around for foods with a high glycemic index, only coming up with senbei. "I've got some rice crackers here, they should work if you chew them well" but Ken had an emergency can of Jumex fruit drink which has tons of sugar in it. And a rice cracker or two, while we had our usual B.S. session.
